SPORT/ATHLETIC INJURIES:
Athletic participation can result in a number of different traumatic and overuse injuries. These include, but are not limited to: Low back pain, Plantar fasciitis, ITB Syndrome, Runner’s knee, rotator cuff pathology, sprains/strains, etc. These injuries are typically a result of 1) previous injury – incomplete healing a previous injury due to poor rehabilitation techniques or ignorance 2) asymmetries – whether left to right, front to back, or rotational imbalances, correcting asymmetries are a big factor for reducing pain and future injury risk 3) poor motor control/coordination – the smoothness and efficiency with which we move is determined by our brain. Throughout the early stages of our lives, we learn to squat, lunge, roll, stand, and walk with efficiency and ease. Modern sedentary lifestyles remove us from performing quality whole-body movements on a regular basis and therefore we lose some of this efficiency of movement. 4) high body mass index – physical deconditioning can lead to carrying excess weight and therefore lead to an increased work load and chronic inflammation for your joints.
Many times, these risk factors occur simultaneously. It is not uncommon to find an overweight individual with a previous history of musculoskeletal injury, multiple muscle imbalances, and motor control/poor coordination, performing repetitive movements. This is a recipe for injury, whether on the athletic field, the gymnasium, or at the work place.
